Feral, cat's, dogs and Fox's
Returning the land to something wildlife can live on again is a time consuming and challenging process. Control of a huge increase in feral animals has proved to be very much needed. We do not enjoy this we love animals, but we have spent years trying different ways and now had no choice.
We had a pack of 6 Dingo's after the fires, 2 were had raised and released apparently as fire approached. These two were the most trouble not afraid of us even running right by us when sitting in an pen with little wombats, they killed every thing they could it was play. Definition of wild dog and dingo is controversial. We like to say if its a lost 'pig hunters dog, generally a mix of many types of dog and its lost or escaped, that then normally becomes a wild dog. A dingo is a dingo and we prefer to leave them alone.
Found in the national park near our house, This poor girl was starving and obviously lost, We had to feed her a few days kept tied up andwe binned the expensive tracking coller and the ranger arranged for it to find the woner and fined a hefty amount and got his dog back, we hope lesson learned, no hunting in National parks. This poor girl was not cut out to be a hunter, as she had not fed herself in the weeks she was missing.
Fox's are beautiful creatures, but also in the wrong country, we had quite a few after the fires and they seem to have disappeared, dogs are renouned for keeping them under control but no dogs for along time, so must be the hundreds of pigs.
Cats, huge feral cats are an issue, we got 5 in 2023, none in 2024 although at least 3 around early in the year, with the coming on huge numbers of pigs they have disappeared for now. Cats will travel up to 14km to get to fire zone where there areeasy pickings. I loved my pet cats, they should be indoors only. Thats a magpie in the cats mouth you can see how big it is.
This is soul destroying we love animals but there are too many in the wrong place with a drastically reduced population of wildlife we have no choice.
