Bilby facts Bilbies have very poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell. They are nocturnal and eat, seeds, spiders, insects, fruit, bulbs, fungi and small animals. Bilbies are fairly solitary, but sometimes live in groups of four. They are the largest member of the bandicoot family. Their gestation is the shortest of all mammals at only 14 days and joeys stay 75 days in the pouch, becoming independent 2 weeks after leaving the pouch. Bilbies have a backwards-facing pouch, with 8 nipples, and normally have 3 young. They are really good diggers with up to a dozen burrows. Bilbies are found in central Australia and across to the Western Australian coast.
