Once upon a Rhyme
"Goosey, goosey gander,
Whither shall I wander?
Upstairs and downstairs,

There I met an old man,
Who would not say his prayers.

and threw him down the stairs."
The earliest version of the rhyme goosey, goosey gander, printed in 1784, didn't include the last four lines but instead ended with the lines
"Upstairs and downstairs,
In my lady's chamber,
There you'll find a cup of sack,
And a race of ginger."
The version that is popular today likely incorporated the lyrics from the nursery rhyme about a crane fly (or Daddy long legs) below!
"Old father long legs,
Can't say his prayers,
Take him by the left leg,
And throw him down the stairs.”
