Koala facts Koalas are marsupials, not bears, and carry their young in a backward-facing pouch. Their nearest relative is a wombat. They have two thumbs which help them climb, and they are nocturnal. Of the 600 or so eucalypts, koalas only eat about 120 of these and 4 to 6 in their own area, so only a certain number of koalas can be supported in each area. They are greatly affected by decreases in forests for roads and housing. Their main hazard in getting from patches of forest is dogs and cars. They eat nearly a kilogram of leaves a night and rarely drink water, except in extreme weather. A joey rides in mum's pouch for 5 to 6 months and then rides on mum's back until it's about a year old. It will not be full grown till its third or fourth year.
