Elvis November 23, 2019 Raised in Western Sydney Released by Rocklily
Yes second ELVIS released at this Greg's Release Pen
Elvis was raised in a back year by a member of the public, no training at all, apart from being totally humanised she did a good job. They are not pets!
We were contacted in desperation, as he kept escaping and no one could talk him and know how to help him become what he should be a wild wombat.
He was quite happy in his large release enclosure for many many months, with trips there 10km each way daily cutting huge amounts of grass knew where food was, and eating grass and hay before we started a super soft soft release. He alternated between real burrows and his burro in the enclosure. We had flooding rains and he simply moved into his release enclosure 9 x 9 metres till things dried out again. This burrow was available to him for another 5 years when we were not seeing him at all on wildlife camera coming and going. There was always fresh hay in his shed in the enclosure if he was hungry.
This was alot of work, with full wombatoriums at Rocklily we were really stretched cutting extra grass and bringing water to fill he self feeding water feeder. Greg only there weekend's, fed him at least 2 days a week.
Elvis now a released wombat, enjoying some sun in front of his burrow.
Its took almost 2 years to get him almost wild we did this from the release pen as we had no room to house him and his only option was euthanasia, which is the NPWS law for non releasable wildlife.
Lucky the bushfire did did not impact this release site stopped by control burn 500m away.
