'Last Chance Saloon' what its all about!

Rocklily's Last Chance Saloon 

We are Warwick and Dianna, and we are Rocklily Wombats, living on the south-west corner of the Blue Mountains National Park. Our bush is still recovering from the superheated 2019/20 fires -  steep hills and gullies choked with regrowth and weeds, dead trees everywhere, and the grassy valleys the wombats once fed in are gone.

We are  just over 120 acres, with about 20 acres cleared like parkland around the pens and homestead - plenty of grass, when the pigs haven't dug it all up.  It's been years of hard work regenerating the land and supporting the wildlife still holding on here, including seeing off a mange outbreak brought in by  foxes after the fires.

Not every wombat can be saved. Adults with mange and attack injuries are often too stressed to survive care, even in the gentlest, most natural setup we can offer, many pass in the first night. For every success with wombats, kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos, too many others have been lost.

So where we can, we treat them in the wild  - using long poles fitted with plastic-covered spoons or dosage cups to apply medical cream and topical treatments, fitting treatment  flaps to burrow entrances and adding medications to supplementary feed. This is the reality behind all wildlife we have been called to treat or has found its way back to us for help. This is our current life, living and caring for country. Wildlife Naturally avoids showing pain as it makes them vulnerable to predators.  Experience helps us recognise this hidden pain or stress and healing is greatly improved by keeping them pain free and relaxed.  Medication is given under vet supervision, but sadly not all vets understand this. Keeping wildlife without proper training meets human needs, not the needs of the animal. Wildlife deserves skilled care, respect, and the chance to return to where they belong.
