Every wombat has their own unique path to the wild, as Jeffery, Bushy, and Pinki beautifully show.
Pinki, who arrived at Rocklily in 2016 weighing just 3kg, was always the shyest of her nursery group. Her trouble-free soft release in 2018 was a textbook success; she adjusted to the wild immediately, and while we rarely see her in person, catching her on our wildlife cameras is always a rare treat.
Bushy was soft-released that same year. He was a crazy little 5kg fellow who used to jump on top of the others at feeding time, sending milk everywhere. Today, at 10 years old, he is a true survivor—having braved the devastating 2019/20 bushfires by sheltering under Warwick’s shed, where he still occasionally returns when the winter weather gets too rough.
Jeffery "White Claw" has had a much bumpier journey. After a brutal wombat attack during his second release attempt left him severely wounded and underweight, he spent three months back in care healing and fattening up in his favorite wombat box. Now, he is finally back at Denis and Dave’s for another shot at freedom. He was so happy riding on the truck alongside his beloved box, which he initially slept in but now just visits for supplementary winter feeds as he transitions to his new, independent life.
