The Orange-bellied Parrot is CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. It is one of three migratory parrot species, breeding only in summer in Tasmania, with most of the population migrating to spend winter in coastal Victoria and South Australia. The Orange-bellied Parrot has a captive breeding program that is a critical part of its recovery efforts. This program aims to increase the wild population by releasing captive-bred birds into their natural habitat in Tasmania, specifically at Melaleuca. The program also maintains a secure, insurance population of around 400 birds across multiple institutions.
